Three months before the World Cup, Tamim Iqbal, the ODI captain for Bangladesh, he unexpectedly announced his retirement from international cricket, abruptly ending a glittering 16-year international career. At a news conference, he organized in Chattogram on Thursday, Tamim made the revelation while surrounded by a mob of reporters. He was visibly upset and in tears. It happened the day after Bangladesh’s first of three ODI defeats to Afghanistan.

“This is the end for me,” he declared. “I gave it my all. I gave it my all. I am currently announcing my retirement from international cricket. My final international match was played against Afghanistan yesterday. It was not an impulsive choice. I was considering the many explanations. I won’t mention it here. I’ve discussed it with my family members. This was the ideal time for me to stop playing international cricket.

“I must give a few folks the thanks they deserve. I’ve always said I played cricket to realize my father’s lifelong ambition. So I’m still determining to what extent my 16-year worldwide career has made Dad proud.

“I also need to thank a lot of other people. Akbar Khan is my youngest chacha (uncle). When I left for my first cricket event, I clutched his hands. His family and I are grateful. I want to thank Tapan da, a coach at MA Aziz Stadium who coached me as a young child. I want to thank all the players from the U-13, U-15, U-17, U-19, A team, Premier League, NCL, and national teams I have played with—especially my teammates from the national team. Thanks to the cricket board, I have had the chance to represent the nation for a very long time. Additionally, I have led Bangladesh. I also want to thank them.”I’m at a loss for words. I tried my best, and I’ll say that much for sure. I gave it my all. Perhaps I needed to be better or better. I’m still determining. But while I was on the job, I gave it my all.

As you can see, I almost cannot talk. There are many other things I want to express. But I do ask that you be mindful of the circumstances. Speaking in this scenario is problematic. It’s difficult to stop playing international cricket. I’m hoping you get it. I apologize for calling you at such a last minute. Thank you to everyone in the media. “I want to thank the fans as well. Your love and belief in me motivated me to offer everything I had for Bangladesh. Please keep me in your prayers as I move forward in my life. Please remember to pray for me.I sincerely thank everyone who has assisted me in developing as a cricket player and human being. My mother, brother, wife, and two kids; also my wife. They endured a great deal of suffering during my travels. They also have a lot to be proud of. I also want to thank them. I’m at a loss for words.

Tamim opted not to explain his choice, instead requesting that attention be kept on the squad. “The end has come. For international cricket, at least. Let’s refrain from asking “Why, why, what is it, what else could have happened,” or similar questions. I’ve always believed that a team is more significant than anyone. Let’s keep the team in mind. The series still has two more games. We will prevail. There are two important awards. Around the same time last year, Tamim, 34, announced his retirement from T20Is. Bangladesh’s one-off encounter against Ireland in April served as his final Test. The BCB has yet to respond to Tamim’s announcement or choose a replacement for the ODI skipper (nor did it name a vice-captain before the series). Litton Das led the team when Tamim was hurt in an ODI match against India in December last year. The current favorite to lead the team in ODIs is Shakib Al Hasan, who currently serves as the regular Test and T20I captain. Tamim made his ODI debut in February 2007 as a teenager. In Bangladesh’s famous victory against India in the World Cup in the West Indies, he scored the game-winning half-century. He concludes the ODI season with the most runs (8313) and hundreds (14) for his nation, and he ranks third among active players in terms of runs scored after Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Tamim was Bangladesh’s second-best Test batsman, with 5134 runs at an average of 38.89 and ten hundred in 70 games. Mashrafe Mortaza, regarded as Bangladesh’s finest captain, has a slightly greater victory % in ODIs than Tamim. Tamim guided Bangladesh to third place in the ODI Super League and 21 victories out of his 37 ODI victories while serving as captain, securing their direct qualification for the World Cup in India this October and November. Additionally, he served as Bangladesh’s captain in a Test match against New Zealand in 2017.
